Us in our lovely new kitchen!
Us in our lovely new kitchen!

After 2 long months, and being pushed back an extra week on us, it is official. We’re home owners! I could hardly contain my excitement, and I felt like a kid on Christmas, but finally having keys to the house is an excellent feeling. We can’t move in quite yet, there’s a ton of work that needs to be done, but we should be moving into our new home by the middle of September.

We decided to take pictures in the one place of the house that needs minimal work, if any at all, and that’s the kitchen. When Missy and I first looked at the house, we came in through the side door into this kitchen area, and pretty much fell in love instantly. Missy didn’t even get 10 steps in the door before she asked our real estate broker, Carol Brooks of ERA Dawson, how much it was going to cost because we were sure it was out of our price range. Thankfully it was not, and now we’re proud to show off our happy little picture.

Eventually, I will write all about our experiences in going through the home buying process, because as a first time buyer, it was a little different than I expected. A few things came up that I didn’t realize until after we had done something that I actually wanted to do something else. We also have a lot of remodeling, and are working with a local contractor to really spice the place up. We will have before and after photos for everything, and can’t wait to see the final product. Full disclosure, Missy will have picked out about 95% of the color scheme and decorating, so I can’t take much, if any credit for it.

We’re so excited about this, and really can’t wait to start making our new house our home. We took our cat Stella over with us last night to check it out, and after a while she finally started to get used to it. It’s the perfect house to entertain in, and we can’t wait for all of our family and friends to come visit us in Maine now. Well, we can, give us until the house is done first people!

Over the next couple weeks, expect small updates, maybe a large post on the whole process, I just haven’t sorted through all of the details yet. Missy already has my “honey do” list going, and she’s got some great visions. I may even join Pintrest just to show off my amazing skills. I can’t wait to get started!

Question: What were some choices or difficulties you faced in the purchase of your new home?

  1. Congrats on taking this big step! The home buying process can be quite overwhelming, especially signing all those forms at closing!

We made the mistake of owning two homes at once, thinking that our renters would not allow their dogs to use the carpets as their personal fire hydrant. And believing they would pay the rent so that we would have no issues paying both mortgages. Yeah…not exactly.

    1. Hahahaha, Thanks Chris! Yeah, I kept the pen after I finished signing because I figured since it was out of ink by the end they wouldn’t want it back.

We’re actually making out like a bandit right now by still living in the apartment for a few more weeks while the construction is getting done, but at a reduced price since we’re leaving middle of September, and our first payment isn’t due until October 1st. I thought about doing the rental situation by getting a duplex, but Missy talked me out of it, probably for the best.

  2. congrats!! 🙂

my husband is a realtor, so we’ve lived 3 different places in our 5 years of marriage! for me, the tough part of moving is finding which renovation projects will BOTH make our lives better and increase resell value.

    1. Thanks a lot Brooke! I’m hoping we don’t go through 3 houses in 5 years, but I have moved twice over 1,000 miles in the last 4! I went from Pittsburgh, PA to Tampa, FL before moving up to Maine. They were all crazy, but I’m ready to finally set some roots down and build a home. We’re also looking at building the value of the home, so you’ll have to check out what we end up doing in some later posts. Thanks for reading and the comment!

  3. Congratulations! It is a stressful yet exciting time to buy your first house. My first house purchase went smooth but the second not so much. I had to educated the loan officer almost derailed the whole deal! She didn’t know what she was doing and even forgot to submit essential paperwork as I belong to an HOA and called me the morning of the closing with issues. Fun times! But it all worked out. Enjoy your new house! Kitchen looks great.
